Hempstead's $42.3 million Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School project advances with key bids awarded. Completion set for 2027-28 school year.

Hempstead Union Free School District pushes forward on its $42.3 million Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School expansion, with bids awarded and construction underway since the October 2025 groundbreaking.
This major project at the school on Fulton Avenue in Hempstead addresses decades of overcrowding from portable classrooms and aging trailers—the first big renovation in 55 years. Voters approved the bond in 2022, funding new classrooms, a library, academic wing, soccer and baseball fields, running track, upgraded parking, and security.
On October 11, 2025, district leaders, teachers, students, and community members broke ground at the campus. The ceremony honored civil rights advocate Alverta B. Gray Schultz, for whom the school was renamed in 1984. BBS Architects designed modern spaces for creativity, collaboration, and 21st-century learning, including performing arts areas.
By June 18, 2025, the Board of Education awarded Phase 2 bids: VRD Contracting, Inc. for general construction (GC-1), LandTek for site work (SC-1), and others for mechanical work (MC-1). These steps replace outdated structures with innovative facilities serving Hempstead students and the community. District reports from early 2026 track ongoing work.
New fields and track will boost school sports and open to Hempstead residents. Security upgrades and redesigned parking enhance safety on the Fulton Avenue site.
Completion targets the 2027-28 school year. Hempstead's budget challenges have made capital investments like this especially meaningful for the district.
