Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson has opened its $78 million Frey Family Emergency Department, doubling the size for faster care. The 29,000-square-foot facility targets the area's aging population with age-friendly features.

With Long Island's emergency rooms busier than ever amid rising chronic illnesses, Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson just unveiled its game-changing $78 million Frey Family Emergency Department. This 29,000-square-foot facility more than doubles the size of the old emergency department, built over 30 years ago on the hospital's campus at 75 North Country Road.
The new department handles over 40,000 visits a year, featuring a split-flow design to cut wait times. Private exam rooms with sliding doors, advanced on-site imaging like CT, X-ray, and ultrasound, and six specialized behavioral health rooms prioritize patient privacy and comfort. Mather, part of Northwell Health, is a Gold Level 1 Geriatric Emergency Department and Age-Friendly Hospital, tailored for Port Jefferson's growing senior population facing complex conditions.
Key enhancements include dedicated ambulance bays, expanded parking off North Country Road, a new signalized main entrance, and a relocated heliport for quicker medevac to the department. The JTM Foundation raised over $21 million, led by a major gift from Robert and Kathryn Frey and family. "This project represents a major investment in the health and safety of our community," said Kevin McGeachy, Mather Hospital president. A super track area speeds care for less critical cases, with negative-pressure rooms ready for infections.
From trauma rooms handling multiple patients to a calming pediatric space and behavioral health suite with natural light, the Frey Family Emergency Department redefines care at Mather Hospital. Port Jefferson residents now get efficient treatment close to home, near spots like the Port Jefferson Village Center and Route 25A shops. Meanwhile, Northwell Health is also eyeing expansion at Plainview Hospital following a recent nurse deal, and NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk broke ground on a new Patchogue Main Street Surgery Center, signaling a broader wave of healthcare investment across Long Island. As Good Samaritan University Hospital opened its $500M Patient Care Pavilion in West Islip, the region's New York State Department of Health continues to track emergency department capacity and patient outcomes statewide.
