The Macy's at Sunrise Mall in Massapequa shuts April 11 amid 66 nationwide closures in 2025 and more in 2026. Long Island shoppers face big changes at this 50-year landmark.

The Macy's department store at **Sunrise Mall** in Massapequa is closing permanently on **April 11**, hitting Long Island shoppers hard as part of a massive retail shakeup. This 208,078-square-foot anchor, open since August 30, 1973 alongside the mall at 400 Sunrise Mall, joins two other local spots—Lake Success Shopping Center in New Hyde Park and Melville Mall in Huntington Station—in the cuts.
Macy's flagged the Massapequa closure in a January 9 Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification to the New York State Department of Labor, posted online February 12, citing economic pressures. It's one of **66 underperforming stores** closing nationwide this year under the "A Bold New Chapter" plan, with a total of **150 stores** targeted by end of 2026. CEO Tony Spring stated, "Closing any store is never easy, but... we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to... focus our resources" on stronger sites. Declining sales from online rivals and fast fashion have squeezed the chain for years.
Long-time fans like retiree Gillian Obedekah, a weekly visitor, mourn the loss of this community hub near Route 27 and Hicksville Road. Remaining Macy's on Long Island stay in Hampton Bays, Huntington Station, Lake Grove, Bay Shore, Garden City, Valley Stream, and Manhasset. Sunrise Mall, once bustling, now loses its tri-level Macy's giant — and the broader Sunrise Mall transformation continues with an Amazon distribution hub and retail expansion already in the works.
After 66 in 2025 and 55 in 2024, Macy's plans 14 more shutdowns in early 2026, pushing toward 80% of the 150-store goal. The company eyes upgrades like more staff in fitting rooms and luxury pivots at surviving spots. Nearby, Saks Off 5th's Deer Park closing has already hit Suffolk County shoppers hard, signaling a broader shift in Long Island's retail landscape.
